Jonathan Rose Companies provided planning services to the Barelas neighborhood in Albuquerque, New Mexico as part of a collaborative effort to address the proposed redevelopment of 27 acres of vacant railyards in the heart of the community. Barelas is a predominantly Hispanic neighborhood and one of the oldest and poorest in the city.
The neighborhood’s original growth was fueled by the arrival of the Santa Fe railyards in the 1880s, bringing thousands of jobs and an infusion of income into the regional economy. The steady decline of the neighborhood is largely attributed to the closing of the railyards in the 1960s and the re-routing of Route 66 away from the neighborhood. These significant changes ultimately led to the loss of economic investment and jobs in the area.
The Barelas neighborhood needed to be strategically positioned to maximize opportunities offered by the proposed redevelopment of the railyards and to minimize any potential negative impacts. Jonathan Rose Companies worked with the Neighborhood Association, residents, businesses, and local officials, to identify and frame key planning issues and design parameters.
Priority concerns that evolved during the community planning process included appropriate levels of density, the balance of mixed-use development, the need for affordable housing, the creation of local jobs, desirable building heights, parking requirements, and transportation opportunities. |
