Owner's Representative—Lake Placid, New York

North Country School

Located on 200 acres in the Adirondack Mountains in Lake Placid, New York, The North Country School is a co-educational junior boarding school for students in grades four through nine. Founded in 1938, the North Country School is rooted in the progressive education movement inspired by the American philosopher John Dewey. The School continues to envision a a place where the experiences of living both in and outside of the classroom have the power to teach and influence students.

Jonathan Rose Companies advised the School with pre-design and pre-development services, including selecting an architect to design a new student home on campus. The new student home will embody the School spirit and provide a nurturing, warm environment devoid of an institutional dormitory feel. The home will provide necessary additional space for both existing and future students on campus and help to address some of the housing constraints for students and house parents. The student home will also be architecturally inspiring, playful, environmentally responsible, and sensitive to neighboring structures and the surrounding landscape.

Jonathan Rose Companies oversaw potential architects, prepared the Request for Proposals, and reviewed the architects submissions. We also advised the School on space programming and permitting issues, project budget, and goals and objectives for the new building. The physical, programming, and construction cost implications of the new building were also examined within the context of a broader campus master plan and school strategic plan.
