New York City Community Gardens

As the advisor for The Trust for Public Land (TPL), Jonathan Rose Companies provided full range of project management services to support the development of infrastructure for forty (40) community gardens in New York City’s five boroughs. Our role was to ensure that the gardens serve their surrounding communities and respond to their neighborhood needs. This challenging project included construction of water systems, fences, sidewalks, and other enhancements, with the intent of improving all forty gardens within one calendar year. The improved urban gardens were handed over to respective neighborhood gardeners for further development before the end of 2002.

The Trust for Public Land owns 69 community gardens throughout New York City. TPL works side by side with dedicated community gardeners to transform vacant lots into vibrant spaces where nature and community thrive. TPL, when necessary, purchases land to permanently protect it and then provides design and development assistance-including physical improvements such as watering systems, fences, and gathering spaces; organizing assistance; stewardship services; grants; environmental education; and programming.
