4 key characteristics of cities that cultivate communities

The United States was founded with the mission of being a land of opportunity for all who chose to come here. Over time, it has extended that promise of opportunity to all who live here, and all who continue to come to seek a better life. And yet, that promise is not equally distributed.


The quality of our communities' schools, housing, health, safety, parks, transportation, jobs, retail, arts and culture, and spiritual resources vary widely, depending on the neighborhood in which one lives. We will not truly be the nation we aspire to be until every one of our children has an equal opportunity to thrive. That does not mean that each will turn out the same, but rather that each one's chance is equal, rather than predetermined by the ZIP code in which they were raised.
